Beryl trained at Leicester College of Art, where her initial
ambition was to be a painter (she still exhibits her botanical
paintings). However once she had been introduced to clay
she decided to pursue a career as a potter. Her studies
at Art College were followed by two years as a production
thrower at Powdermill Pottery making a variety of functional
pots for hotels and private commissions. She then taught
Pottery, Painting and Design for 22 years at Richmond Adult
and Community college and Esher Green Adult Education Centre.
On finishing her teaching career in 1995 she spent two years
sailing with her husband completing a circumnavigation.
In 1979 she set up and began working from her own studio
and has exhibited at various venues and galleries since
that time.
Although the majority of Beryl’s work is thrown, reduction
fired stoneware, she also experiments combining making techniques,
and she enjoys trying different methods of firing kilns
e.g. Raku and Fuming, but always fires with an open flame.
She is currently developing vase and bowl forms with contrasting
rough textures and smooth surfaces. The main influences
on her work are from the natural world. Beryl has recently
been working in porcelain.
