For most of my life I have been a maths teacher who embroidered
in her spare time. In 1990 my husband’s job took us
to Singapore where I took a break from teaching and enjoyed
learning about the culture and textiles of South East Asia.
When
I returned to England I studied for City & Guilds (parts
I & II) in embroidery and design at Richmond (1994/8).
I enjoyed discovering new techniques and making my own designs.
My then teenage daughter occasionally pronounced a piece
‘cool’. The ultimate compliment!
Another
spell in Singapore followed and I studied at the museum
and gave some lectures on ikat dying and beaded clothing.
I now exhibit with ‘Kaleidoscope’ mixed media
group and ‘Opus’ embroidery group.
Over
the last two years I have exhibited at:
Wimbledon
Fountain Gallery, Hampton Court
Ewell
Contemporary Textiles Fair at Teddington‘s Landmark
Arts Centre,
Osterley House
Cranleigh
Wonersh
Lipinski Gallery in Shere
Country Pictures in Bramley
FreshArt in Islington
Gallery Amimoni in Ionnina, Greece.
For
obvious reasons my work is influenced by my travels in SE
Asia and many design ideas are dawn from those cultures.
I am interested in patterns made by man and nature. I enjoy
giving an odd twist to conventional stitching techniques
often resulting in three-dimensional work. During 2002,
I sold a number of pieces to the Tilda Rice company for
office display and am currently engaged on a large commission
for them.
