Approaches to Nature — Nel Whatmore and Polly Rose Morris

Vibrant Florals, swirling seascapes and evocative landscapes, contrasted with purposeful linocuts, shimmering with gold leaf. Mother and daughter duo.

Nel Whatmore has been an artist for 40 years in October. Her inspiration is drawn from the natural world, ranging from her beautiful garden in Yorkshire to the spectacular coastlines of the UK. She has been a regular exhibitor at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where her stand has won multiple awards. She was Artist in Residence at RHS Harlow Carr near Harrogate, and has been selected to paint several Botanical National Collections.

Nel works in pastel and oils and her work is expressive, colourful and uplifting. She aims to capture moments in nature that make us pause, take our breath away and reveal the beauty that’s all around us.

Her studio is in the wonderful converted woollen mill, Sunny Bank Mills, in Farsley, just outside Leeds, where the Great British Sewing Bee is filmed.

Polly graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2021. Her career so far has been varied, from working in costume and set design for theatre and film/TV, to returning to her original passion of painting. In 2023 she discovered her joy for relief printmaking, which she predominantly works in now.

With a passionate interest in the natural world and being a keen birder, she draws inspiration from the stunning natural beauty that surrounds her small flat in Edinburgh. Her printmaking explores the treasured moments to be discovered when walking in nature, and magpie-like as she is, all the treasures she finds along the way.
