Barbara Mansi

Barbara is a self-taught professional artist, specialising in mosaics. She has a degree in Italian and Classical studies, and worked in education for over 20 years. Her professional career as an artist started recently although she has been mosaic making for about 8 years.

Barbara was born in Italy where she grew up and lived until she left for the UK at the age of 18. However, her love for art started when she was a very young woman. She dedicated her spare time to the pursuit of many forms of art: from ceramics to watercolours, from sculpture to drawings. she spent a whole summer working for a family run pottery studio where she hand painted ceramics.

The art of mosaic making was introduced to her when she enrolled on an evening course at the local art school. What she finds interesting and what ultimately attracted her to this art, is the process involved in mosaic making: the initial inspiration or idea which influences the design, the choice of material and colours as well as the substrate on which the mosaic will be laid, the cutting of the material using a variety of tools and finally the finished piece which in most cases looks rather different from the initial idea/ design but is, nevertheless, beautiful and rewarding.

Her work is mostly inspired the the world around her. She is mostly interested in the infinite shapes which nature produces: a beautiful flower or an interesting plant. She also takes a lot of inspiration from mythical figures as well as everyday objects.

Barbara loves loves experimenting with different type of materials such as glass, pebbles, stones and marble as well as creating concrete structures as focal points in gardens and open spaces.

Her choice of colours is influenced by the vibrant landscapes of her country of origin, Italy and by the Mediterranean where she spent most of her holidays.

Barbara has recently starting to produce unique micro mosaic jewellery. Micro mosaic is a very antique mosaic technique which requires the pulling of glass to produce spaghetti shape like rods called 'filati' which are then cut into 2 - 3 mm pieces to produce very detailed images. She uses Venetian glass called 'smalti' which she melts in her studio. Barbara also makes her own silver base on which she places her mosaic.

Barbara comments “I believe that what makes my art unique is its vibrancy, colours and use of suggesting shapes. What I intend to show in my art is not necessarily what you see, and it is this subjectivity that I find very precious and exciting.”
